12 December 2007/ UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean

Within the framework of FIART 2007, the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean in cooperation with the National Craft Center under the Cuban Fund for Cultural Heritage (FBC) has launched a multimedia on the Project Needles Trinidad.

The wealth of intangible cultural expressions in Trinidad adds to the well known landscape for which the area and the Valley of Sugar Mills have been inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The project Needles, born in the city of the south of Cuba, aims at the revitalization of traditional designs and the use of better materials in drawing new strategies for marketing the products manufactured by crafts makers, knitters and embroiderers from Trinidad, true “living treasures” bearers of exceptional knowledge and creativity.

The multimedia, which includes two CDs, presents the efforts made by the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean in Havana, in close cooperation with the Cuban Fund for Cultural Heritage and Institutions in Trinidad to implement the project. CD 1 presents the Project Needles Trinidad, and CD 2 presents a catalogue of traditional needlework illustrating the skills attained by craft makers from Trinidad.
