On 17 January, the Library San Javier, in Medellín, Colombia, was the venue of the creation of the Commission of Honor of the IV International Conference of the Spanish Language, thel XIII Congress of the Assocaitions of Spanish Language Academies and the Meeting of Rectors of the Interantional System for the Certification of Spanish as a Foreign Language -SICELE-.
The ceremony was presided over by the Colombian President, His Excellency Álvaro Uribe Vélez, and by the Mayor of Medellín, Sergio Fajardo. Former President Belisario Betancur, in his capacity of Chairman of the Commission of Honor, the Minister of Culture, Her Excellency Elvira Cuervo de Jaramillo, the Mayor of Cartagena de Indias, Nicolás Curi Vergara, and the directors of the Real Academia Española, Victor García de la Concha and of the Instituto Cervantes, César Molina, also attended the ceremony.
During the Conference, was also launched the Call for the Associations of Spanish Language Academies Awards, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Regional center for the Promotion of Book in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal -CERLALC- and co-sponsored by Espasa Publishing House.
The Awards aim at boosting the efforts made by institutions and individuals that promote reading, such as libraries and elementary and secondary school teachers, based on experiences of 2006. Similarly, the award aims at encouraging university students to write as part of the subjects Linguistics, Literatura and other related subjects, and to acknowledge competence of secondary level students chosen by their grades in the Placement exams in Grammar (Spanish Language) and Literature. Conditions of entry for these awards can be accessed in both the CERLALC website () and that of the Congress (). Awards will be presented during the XIII Congress of Language Academies in an official ceremony on March 23 at 7:00 p.m., at the Library San Javier of Medellín.
During activities previous to the IV International Congress of the Spanish Language to be held on 26 to 29 March in Cartagena, the city of Medellín will be the venue for the discussions of representatives of the Spanish Royal Academy of the Language and the other 21 Academies members of the Association, as well as the Rectors Meeting, who will also be ion the Colombian city, venue of multiple educational, cultural and entertainment activities, such as:
*Official approval of the basic text of the Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española
* Presentation of the Basic Dictionary of Spanish
* Adoption by the Instituto Cervantes and the rectors of Latin American Universities, of the International System of the Spanish as a Foreign Language, SICELE.
At these conferences, to be held in March, personalities from the academic, cultural and scientific world will meet, a critical manner of promoting the transformation of Medellín making it a flag city in Education.
In short, the IV International Congress of the Spanish Language to be held in Cartagena de Indias, under the slogan «Present and Future of the Spanish Language: Unity in Diversity», will gather more than 1200 scholars, writers, reporters, students and personalities of culture, politics and economy to analyze and discuss on the status, problems and challenges of languages and of Spanish in particular as the language for international communication, among other topics.
